The OLTD program consists of ten, six-week, three credit courses, engaging students in discovering best practice for online teaching using the latest Web 2.0 tools and Learning Management Systems. The OLTD program is designed to meet the needs of school districts seeking certified, skilled teachers to work in distance learning schools and classrooms provincially and potentially internationally. It will also serve the needs of post-secondary and other teaching/learning institutions encouraging their faculty and instructors in the use of fully online, hybrid and blended delivery models.
The program engages a cohort model of 25 seats and is focused on student success. Asycnchronous and synchronous formats are offered, fully online. December holidays and summer vacations are honoured (July and August) providing a realistic schedule for practicing teachers, instructors and working professionals.
Courses are offered via synchronous and asynchronous delivery models.
The OLTD program also qualifies graduates to complete VIU's Masters of Education (Leadership) graduate program with only an additional 10 credits of project work required. Successful OLTD program graduates may also quality for increased TQS salary placement.
Applicants with either a B.Ed OR a degree in another discipline with current teaching experience will be encouraged. Applications for September startup are accepted throughout the year. Please contact our Education Advising department for further information and registration requirements.
Applicants without an undergraduate degree with current teaching experience may also be considered on completion of a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) by the Program Coordinator. The Graduate Diploma in Online Learning and Teaching qualifies graduates to complete VIU's Masters of Education (Leadership) degree program with an additional 10 credits of applied project work. It is anticipated that project work will be completed in one semester with graduation in Spring of the following year.
